Frequently Asked

Overseeding is typically done after aeration as the ground is more porous for the seed to penetrate the soil, but does not plant the seed as thoroughly as slice-seeding. Overseeding typically achieves a 30% germination rate versus slice-seeding at over 70%.
The advantage of seeding is that the seed grows quickly in the loam. The challenge is that proper soil preparation and frequent watering are essential for success in establishing a lawn from seed. However, seed growth does take time versus the quick results from laying sod with fully grown grass. The main disadvantage of sod is that it usually costs twice as much as seeding.
The ability to install a great looking new lawn and the overall cost of the install is dependent on a number of factors. The soil composition, smoothness of the overall terrain, and the amount of sunlight the area is exposed to can impact success. Reducing shading from nearby maturing trees through pruning or tree removal could help achieve adequate sun exposure.
Best results are achieved during late summer through early fall. The warm days and cool nights are ideal for growth. Lawn seeding in the spring and summer is not recommended due to susceptibility to fast-growing weeds and crabgrass. Hot temperatures in the Summer can also negatively affect new grass growth. Although seeding can be performed at this time, some areas may require touch-up seeding in the fall. In the first year, any new lawn will battle weeds. All loam contains dormant weed. Spring lawns are especially susceptible to a weed crop, especially crab grass. A fertilizer program can help execute proper timing of applications to help your new lawn thrive and sustain.
